County: Tazewell County
Sighting Date:Winter 2003-04
Location:Near the intersection of South Farmers Street & Route 701/Richlands, VA
Activity:I took care of my dad`s horses for him when he became ill. I always carried feed buckets and a bright lantern/light (compliments of my brother @ Norfolk/Southern Railroad). I walked from the garage which contained the feed, unlocked the gate and walked up to the horse stalls. There is only one way to put it. I got really scared and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. Dogs were barking on the mountain in the distance and the horses did not want to come out of their stalls. This was the first time this had ever happened. Usually they can`t wait. I could hear some rustling in the brush above the stalls and it was something big. I shined the lantern up to where the rustling was coming from about 30 feet up the mountain and I thought it could be a bear at first. Then I really got scared. It was a huge thing covered in hair but it moved on two feet instead of four! It couldn`t be a bear! I filled the horses` feeders, unlatched their stall doors and hurried as fast as I could. I kept my lantern on the whole time shining it around. I left as hurriedly as I could and prayed the horses would be allright. I told my dad what happened and asked him for permission to carry a shotgun with me from then on.
Setting:Around 4:30AM at my dad`s barn. I always went there in the early morning to feed and turn the horses out for the day before going to my job.
Witnesses: Just me and the two horses.
